CFA Establishes 5mm Working Group Magnetic Disk, Wireless Communications
and Fax/Modem Palo Alto, Calif. - October 30, 1997 - The CFA has formed a new Working Group dedicated to standardizing a 5mm thick version of the CompactFlashTM card for use in magnetic disk storage, wireless communications, fax/modem and high capacity flash card applications. The Working Group was formed to work within the CFA Technical Committee to help the Association define and standardize the capabilities and requirements for small form factor card applications that require a thicker card than the current 3.3mm thick CompactFlash card. The Working Group will accomplish this by making recommendations as to how to enhance the CF Card Standard to better support the new applications. The group's immediate goals are to define the necessary extensions to the CF Card Standard that will allow for a 5mm thick Card and easy identification of the new application devices Larry Kopp of AMP has been elected the chair of the 5mm Working Group. The first meeting of the Group will be on December 18, 1997, in the Silicon Valley area. Companies interested in participating in the 5mm Working Group or attending the meeting should contact Bill Frank, CFA Executive Director at 650-843-1220 or by e-mail at billfrank@compactflash.org. The CFA is also soliciting new members to support the standardization of the CF Card form factor in these new applications. The CompactFlash Association is a non-profit, mutual-benefit corporation that promotes adoption of CompactFlashTM as a worldwide, ultra-small, removable storage standard for capturing and transporting digital data, audio and images. The CFA, which makes the CompactFlash, CFA logo and CF logo trademarks and technical specification available royalty-free to member companies, is headquartered in Palo Alto, CA. The CompactFlash storage card is an ultra-small, removable data storage system first introduced in 1994. CompactFlash, which meets all PCMCIA standards, can be easily slipped into a low cost, passive Type II adapter card which can then be used to move data, images and audio to any standard PC card slot in computers, printers, set-top boxes and other electronic platforms. The CF package is also currently used for I/O applications such as Ethernet LAN cards, with future growth planned for magnetic disk, wireless communications and fax/modem applications. The CFA was founded in October 1995 by Apple Computer Inc., Canon, Eastman Kodak Company, Hewlett-Packard, LG Semicon, Matsushita (Panasonic), Motorola, NEC, Polaroid, SanDisk, Seagate and Seiko Epson. The CFA now has 86 member companies.
