Company Background
Originally founded in 1988 as Advanced Automation, Duel came into existence in 1991 as a company focused on serving the PC Card market. The founders of Duel were the pioneers in using sonic welding to seal PC Cards, and they still hold the original patent on the process. In 1994 Methode Electronics purchased Duel Systems. The merger provided Duel with financing for expansion, and support in Asia and Europe, while still leaving Duel independent enough to respond quickly to custom requirements and local needs.
Sonic Welding
Ultrasonic welding uses high-frequency vibrations to bond plastic parts. The process is fast and easy --cards can be top-loaded and welded in less than 10 seconds with less than ten minutes of training. Duel offers a two-piece design that snaps together for testing prior to welding.
Custom Products Available
Duel Systems has a unique modular approach to card manufacture that allows a high degree of design flexibility. This feature means that companies with custom designs will find low prices and fast prototypes the norm.
Automation Options
The Duel management team builds an automation focus into every design. Duel designed all of the small form factor cards with built-in features for automated loading, labeling, testing, and welding at customer sites. Duel took more time to come to market with CompactFlash cards, in order to be the first to market with a system and process designed for cost-saving automation.
